Your hosts

Paul and Judy Tokmakian

Paul and Judy Tokmakian took the reins of the inn on February 28, 2020, and have kept its tradition of unhurried Vermont hospitality ever since.

  • The house was built for Dr. Horace G. Ripley and first occupied by his family in 1931
  • French Baronial in architecture, designed to resemble a French chateau
  • The backyard holds one of the largest cutleaf Japanese maple trees in the United States
  • The gardens were first planted when the house was built and once served the Retreat's therapy program
Around Brattleboro

Make a Day of It

The inn sits a few blocks past the park from downtown Brattleboro, within walking distance of restaurants, galleries, and theaters, and on the water for paddling days. A few local favorites:

Water Days and Scenic Drives

The inn sits on the water, in easy reach of kayaking, canoeing, fishing, and tubing, with a rental shop just down the street. In autumn, the inn's own blog recommends the Molly Stark Scenic Byway for peak color.

Before you go

  • Eating: downtown holds 30+ restaurants and pubs (the inn's own count). The Brattleboro Farmers Market runs every Saturday in the warmer months and monthly in winter, and is the inn's pick for fresh food or lunch.
  • Foliage season: peak weekends book out fast, and a two-night minimum generally applies to foliage-season stays. The inn notes it sells out for big event weekends like the Harris Hill Ski Jump.
  • Getting around: parking on site is one space per room. Let the inn know in advance if you need parking for more than one vehicle.
  • Weather: winter weather is not a valid reason for cancellation under inn policy, so allow extra drive time in snow and consider travel insurance.
  • Safety: the trails and water are right out the back gate. Tell someone your route before heading out alone, and give rivers extra respect in spring runoff.

Questions, Answered

How do I check rates and book?

Current rates are shown on our booking page. Check rates on ResNexus, or call or email us and we will help.

Is breakfast included in the room rate?

Yes. All room rates include our full gourmet breakfast, served each morning. Room rates are per room, per night, double occupancy, and are subject to change.

What are the check-in and check-out times?

Check-in is from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Please let us know if you plan to arrive after 7:00 pm. Room check-out is promptly at 11:00 am, although you are welcome to enjoy the property all day.

What is the deposit and cancellation policy?

A deposit in the amount of one night or 50% of the stay (plus the full charge for any packages, gifts or add-ons), whichever is greater, is required at time of booking; the remainder is charged at check-in. Cancellations need 14 days notice before arrival. All cancellations may be subject to a $25 per room administrative fee, and reservations over $1,500 may be subject to a $100 fee. Cancellations less than 14 days before arrival are charged in full and are non-refundable, unless we can re-book the room.

Is there a minimum stay?

A two-night minimum generally applies to Friday and Saturday night check-ins, as well as holidays, special events, and all of foliage season. Some special events and holidays may require a three-night stay. Please call if you need a one-night stay; we work hard to accommodate guest requests when we are able.

Are children welcome?

Guests with older children are always welcome, but the inn is not appropriate for very young children or infants unless special arrangements are made in advance. Please call us first. A $35 fee per person per night applies for an additional person in any guest room.

Please call or email to confirm. The inn's stated policy does not allow animals other than service animals, so check with us before you book if you travel with a four-legged companion.

Is the inn smoke-free?

Yes. The inn is completely smoke-free inside. Smoking is allowed outside at designated areas only.

What taxes apply?

Rates are subject to a 9% Vermont Meals and Rooms Tax and a 1% Brattleboro Local Tax, not included in the quoted rate.

How can I pay?

A major credit card is required to secure your stay, and you may pay with an alternate payment method at check-in. We accept cash, traveler's checks, and most major credit cards.

Is there parking?

Yes, but parking on site is limited to guests only, with one space per room. Please let us know in advance if you will need parking for more than one vehicle.
